Prof. Randy Pausch spoke at the commencement for the Carnegie Mellon batch of ’08. Randy is terminally ill and 9 months ago, doctors had given him only 6 months to live. His talk is truly inspiring – follow your dreams and find your passion. Take 6 minutes of your day to watch it through to the end.

To pee or not to pee!

May 19, 2008 2 comments

Two Belgian beer fans have launched a video game named ‘Place to Pee’, which allows players to slalom down ski slopes or kill aliens while relieving themselves at urinals! They take the phrase “point and shoot” to a whole new level! Apparently they were inspired one afternoon while drinking beer! I am waiting for my moment of inspiration. I bow to these innovators! Obelix would surely have said “These Belgians are crazy” !

Obelix - these belgians are crazy!

Reuters carried this story in their Oddly Enough section. I would highly recommend subscribing to the Oddly Enough RSS feed. It gives me daily proof that truth is stranger than fiction!

The Indian upon God

May 7, 2008 5 comments

I passed along the water’s edge below the humid trees,
My spirit rocked in evening light, the rushes round my knees,
My spirit rocked in sleeps and sighs; and saw the moorfowl pace
All dripping on a grassy slope, and saw them cease to chase
Each other round in circles, and heard the eldest speak:
Who holds the world between His bill and made us strong or weak
Is an undying moorfowl, and He lives beyond the sky.
The rains are from his dripping wing, the moonbeam from His eye.

I passed a little further on and heard a lotus talk:
Who made the world and ruleth it, He hangeth on a stalk,
For I am in His image made, and all this tinkling tide
Is but a sliding drop of rain between His petals wide.

A little way within the gloom a roebuck raised his eys
Brimful of starlight, and he said: The Stamper of the Skies,
He is a gentle roebuck; for how else, I pray, could He
Conceive a thing so sad and soft, a gentle thing like me?

I passed a little further on and heard a peacock say:
Who made the grass and made the worms and made my feathers gay,
He is a monstrous peacock, and He waveth all the night
His languid tail above us, lit with myriad spots of light.

The Indian education system

May 5, 2008 3 comments

In other words, my pet peeve! I don’t want to rant – I will let this article do the talking and maybe follow up with a post later!

What do you think the Indian education sector needs to become world class? For starters better leadership-Arjun Singh and his ilk better realize that our competitive advantage will rapidly erode if we do not invest in the right areas! Get good people to teach, don’t have ten year old curricula. Invest in research and infrastructure. Reform the exam system (very important)… Dang I am ranting – stop. So, what do you think?

This blog has a new look.

Reasons? For starters, in the old theme, links would not show up very well.

And then, I just liked this header image! Would love to have an image that is a mix of Mumbai and San Francisco in that place. If you know of an image of a typical Mumbai street please give me links! I shall play with Gimp, which is essentially the open source version of Photoshop and make myself a nice header 🙂

I am not sure about the white background though. Wastes energy! Check out to save the world by using less energy on your monitors 🙂

The list!

May 4, 2008 6 comments

Today, I started something I have been wanting to do for ages. I am going to maintain a list of books that I read. It will be fun to examine it years later when my tastes will have changed, blah blah!

Maybe another list of movies too…
