I’m back!

Its been a long hiatus from blogging! Primarily because I had nothing to say!!

Blogging!

You "said it" Hugh!

And then I stumbled on this picture which reminded me of how Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Kumar received the Padma Shri from the government of India this year. Now, I’m no cultural snob, but I thought the Padma Shri is a rare honor given for rare achievements in ones field.  Do the international khiladi and the former Ms. World really deserve it? I don’t think so!

I bet Ricky's life is way funner!

    Well why not? Rising to the top of an industry which has such an impact on the lives of literally millions of people is a special achievement. Maybe not Ash but certainly Akshay who has been a top actor for almost 20 years. Why grudge them their award just because they have fame and fortune anyway? Why do we feel good when such an award is given to a talented and accomplished but ill-rewarded person but complain if it is given to a talented and accomplished and well-rewarded person? It’s almost as if the prize is our way of saying, “Hey, we never paid to come to your concerts or buy your CDs so have this instead”.

    Think of it this way: many a rickshaw-walla and poor farmer were entertained by Akshay’s gravity defying stunts and silly dialogues after a long hard day’s labor out in the harsh world. He helped in letting millions of people escape the banality of their real life existence for a few hours on a weekly/monthly basis. When he has such a wide positive reach, although “positive” in a non-Mother Theresa sense, why shouldnt he be recognized with Padma Shri?
    The same holds true for Aish too.

    @Nikhil and Madhuri
    IMO Bollywood is the opiate of the masses. The only “impact” it has on millions is letting them escape the drudgery of life and imagine being the hero/heroine!

    I’m not grudging the award to Akki because he is rich. I am against giving it to him, because I don’t think he has reached the pinnacle of acting. He does v. similar roles over and over. I’d rather that someone like Saurabh Shukla got the award!

    Also surprising how it takes us years to recognize non-mainstream artistes who have indeed reached the pinnacle of their art, e.g Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar ’09 or Pt. Bhimsen Joshi ’08

    Is this not impact enough?

    Padma Awards are given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field.(http://india.gov.in/myindia/padma_awards.php)
    I think Akki fits the bill.

    If you are an actor, your service is to entertain. It is not the Deepa Mehtas of the world that entertain but the David Dhawans and the Subhash Ghais. So where is the relevance of variety of roles? He who entertains for 20 years has done exceptional and distinguished service in his field and hence deserves a Padma
